The state of New York has not yet opened its first recreational marijuana dispensary, but there are still plenty of options. There are several legal medical dispensaries open across the state, as well as several retail locations. A number of dispensaries will open as hybrid stores, offering both recreational and medical products. Some will offer delivery services.
Before opening a cannabis dispensary, an owner must
verify that the business is in compliance with the law. They must also secure
an investor. In addition, they must get approval from the Office of Cannabis
Management. Once the office has approved the license, the owner can start
selling the cannabis products.
According to the state's Office of Cannabis Management, there are currently about 900 applicants for the first round of licenses. Of those applicants, 36 have been approved. These licenses are designated as Cannabis Dispensary near me Conditional Adult-Use Retail Dispensary (CAURD) permits. Applicants must demonstrate a significant presence in the state to receive a CAURD permit.
If you are a California resident, you can legally store
up to five ounces of cannabis at home. You can buy two to four vape cartridges
and seven pre-rolled cigarettes that weigh a gram each. However, there are
restrictions for what kind of products you can buy. For example, it is illegal
to transport the product outside the state. It is also prohibited to use
cannabis within 100 feet of a school or school building.
As of the end of December, the state will be able to
begin delivering recreational cannabis to residents. This is part of a plan by
Governor Kathy Hochul to get the industry up and running by 2023.
A vacant space in the East Village will soon be turned
into the state's first licensed adult-use marijuana dispensary. Housing Works,
a nonprofit organization that serves the homeless, will operate the shop. They
have a history of serving people who have been incarcerated and will also train
people in the marijuana industry.
A second retail dispensary is expected to open in
January. Currently, there are about 13 licensed businesses in the city,
including Still River Wellness, Premium MFG, LLC, and The Botanist. But these
companies are just a few of the dozens of new stores that will likely be open
in the coming years.
The state's Office of Cannabis Management has received
nearly 600 applications for retail dispensary licenses. Out of those
applications, 28 were awarded CAURD licenses. To qualify for a CAURD license,
applicants must have operated a small business or have a background in
equity-entrepreneurship.
Besides CAURD licenses, the state has also issued
licenses to eight nonprofits that have been designated as conditional adult-use
retail dispensaries. The businesses are expected to be the first to receive
their licenses.
While these shops will be in high demand, they will
probably have to be opened early. During this time, you may encounter longer
lines.
